The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling earlier this week upholding the decision of a lower court which had found against C Everett Koop and ordered that the former Surgeon General pay 2.5 million dollars in damages.  Writing the majority opinion, Justice Roberts argued, "Without the plaintiffs' permission, Dr. Koop has clearly profited over his career from the goodwill and earnestness with which the plaintiffs have long been associated and, although Dr. Koop did not infringe on a registered trademark belonging to the plaintiffs per se, he has clearly infringed on the de facto trademark of all Amish people by wearing that goofy beard."
