Same-Sex Marriage Fight Enters Phase II

E-mail

Proponents of same sex marriage in Massachusetts who won the right to marry when the state's Supreme Court ruled that restricting same sex marriage was unconstitutional under Massachusetts law now enter an important new phase in the process.  As many nay-sayers predicted, the gay and lesbian community are demanding further rights as they come to realize the limited scope of the Supreme Court's decision.  In particular many distraught gays and lesbians, after enjoying nearly 6 years of the right to marry, are now frantically pleading for the right to divorce.  The community seems to be approaching this new fight with even greater fervor and with the same single-minded focus that ironically caused them to overlook this particular issue the first time around.  "We consider this an equally fundamental and, believe me, a much more desperately needed right than the right to marry.  "I guess we really didn't think this one through. It's sort of like I'm back at that club in D.C. in the 90's and I've forgotten the 'safe word'" said Hugh Borgen head of the Worchester Same-Sex Divorce League.

But this fight may prove to be more difficult than the first as even Hollywood lines up to defend divorce, one of its most treasured institutions. The DODA (Defense of Divorce Act) which is being authored by none other than former Republican candidate John McCain already has the enthusiastic support of such celebrities as Ben Affleck, Geena Davis and of course ZsaZsa Gabor.

Bill Donohue of the Catholic League is so vehemently against both sides of the gay divorce issue that his head might explode, finally.
